Cargo ships are the backbone of global trade, transporting goods across the world's oceans. It's worth that almost everything we use in our daily, from food to furniture, has likely spent time on a cargo ship traveling across the sea. These ships are essential to keeping the global economy moving.

The "triple planetary crisis" is happening, including climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Projections show global emissions in 2030 will still be roughly twice as high as needed to limit warming to 1.5C

From phasing out fossil fuel subsidies to tackling the surging costs of loss and damage caused by climate change impacts, 2024 is likely to see growing pressure for more ambitious action to fight global warming

The urgency comes as officials and climate policy analysts warn the most ambitious Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7F) is growing harder to reach

About 55,000 merchant ships trade internationally. Additionally, the size of container ships has doubled in the past two decades, further exacerbating the issue.

Maritime shipping is a major contributor to global emissions, with around 300 million tons of heavy fuel oil burned annually. However, the industry is taking steps towards reducing its impact on the environment. In 2023, international agreements were signed to achieve zero emissions by 2050, marking a significant milestone in the fight against climate change.
